A true leader is someone who attracts a following by choice, not because they are compelled to.

One can be a good leader by developing these 5Rs of leadership:

Role

Management guru Peter Drucker said, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things”.  One should not merely rely on the appointment to assert authority to do things right, but inspire and influence to do the right things.

Relationship

Learn to like people. Connect with them, treat them as individuals and you will develop trust and positive work relationship.

Result

Achieve results, be the change agent, make a difference in your contributions, be a role model, and you will earn credibility as a leader.

Reciprocity

Leadership is not all about yourself, growing your own knowledge and wisdom. Invest in cultivating wisdom in others, unleash the potential in them, give them room to develop, stretch them and expand their endless possibilities.

Respect

Leaders are respected for how they have led and inspired others. With consistency, continually growing yourself and developing others, you will earn the respect from others.  They follow you for who you are and who you represent.
